About Geoff

Geoff lives at Mitchelton with his wife Jan, their three children, and dogs Snarl and Growl (not their real names). Geoff and Jan are active members of their local church and are also busily involved in the cultural and sporting interests of their children.

He is passionate about local issues and works hard with the local community to make life better for local people and families. He also enjoys research in areas such as social change, economics and the environment. Another of Geoff’s passions is fighting injustice, particularly for young people.

The Brisbane Lions football team is Geoff's sporting passion and he and his family attend as many home games as they can. He’s an avid reader and enjoys running, walking and spending as much time as possible with his family.

His ancestry can be traced back to Irish and Scottish emigrants who arrived in Australia in the mid 1800s and settled in northern Victoria, the Riverina (southern NSW) and Nanango in Queensland.

Geoff was born in Culcairn in the southern Riverina near Albury NSW, in 1952. He is very much a product of his upbringing in the country and he retains those country ethics of loyalty, hard work, initiative and old-fashioned goodness. You can take the boy out of the country but not the country out of the boy.

He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) and a Bachelor of Laws from the Australian National University in Canberra and began work as a public servant in Canberra. He also worked as a solicitor in Sydney, and then as a Barrister of the Supreme Court of NSW and ACT and the Federal and High Court. He enjoyed his work at the NSW bar in Sydney before becoming involved as a union official in the construction industry. Geoff and his family later moved to Queensland where he continued his work as a union official.

Geoff Wilson was elected to State Parliament as the Member for Ferny Grove in June 1998. He was appointed the Minister for Mines and Energy in September 2006. Previously, Geoff was chair of the Parliamentary Crime and Misconduct Committee and a member of the Select Committee on the Consequences of Changing Political Status.

Geoff has chaired various Parliamentary Estimates Committees and has worked on a number of Ministerial Backbench Committees covering portfolios such as, Employment, Training and Industrial Relations, Attorney-General and Justice, Transport and Main Roads, Natural Resources and Mines, and Energy. He also worked on a number of Ministerial Backbench Committees covering portfolios such as, Employment, Training and Industrial Relations, Attorney-General and Justice, Transport and Main Roads, Natural Resources and Mines, and Energy.

By working at the grass roots with local community groups, Geoff has been able to make a significant contribution to improving services and the lifestyle for many people in his Ferny Grove electorate. Traffic and public transport are high on Geoff’s agenda. Examples are the major upgrading of Samford Road through Ferny Grove and Keperra, improving facilities at the Ferny Grove railway station (with more work to be done), and creating a Translink solution to public transport in the Samford Valley.

Health is also a high priority for Geoff, with the development of the North West Community Health Centre at Keperra and the associated Community Consultative process that he personally instigated. Geoff also works with local youth groups and community and sporting organisations to improve the delivery of support services for young people, and has lobbied hard for more funding for our local schools.

Geoff has been a tireless worker for the local community and as Minister for Mines and Energy he is also a strong voice in Cabinet to deliver the best outcomes for his constituents in Ferny Grove and the people of Queensland.
